Annual Magic

Earth mysteries, crafts, folklore, ghosts, puppets, eccentrics, landscape archaeology and rude rhymes; The Puffin annual series commenced in 1974 with distinctive cover art by Puffin's in house illustrator Jill McDonald and illustrious guest illustrators such as Raymond Briggs, Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, Fritz Wegner and Tove Jansson. With fiction and articles by the likes of Michael Bond, Susan Cooper, Tove Jansson, Norman Hunter, Roald Dahl and Nicholas Fisk. Contributors to number one also incuded Joyce Grenfell and Prince Charles !

I post these excerpts not simply as an exercise in nostalgia - I never owned them as a kid and I can't imagine there would have been many children who were completely absorbed by them -  it would have been a disappointing Christmas gift from a distant "auntie" perhaps, that would  slowly grab your interest later in the year. But its instructive to remember how childrens' entertainment of this period, for some at least, lent a sense of enchantment to the world, maybe educated, but also mystified, terrified and occupied. You could say that these annuals are a kind of snapshot of British childrens' fiction and television of the period too. Its a glimpse of a world before CGI, licensing, Cowell and Cbeebies drained any real magic from our childrens' culture.
Watch out those wires are live !
This weekend why not discover
your own ley lines, or...

make some Smilers.

Dad ? What's a palimpsest ?

Did this Peter Edwards character come from Clinkskell ?
A little sinister maybe but not as much as this...
at home with the author of "Cruise of the Happy-go-Gay".

Will this be in the test sir ?

Jon Brooks: Four Days Four Recordings

The ever industrious Jon Brooks (you know, him off of The Advisory Circle and Cafe Kaput) recently set himself the task of recording four tracks in four days using only a guitar, some effects pedals, an old keyboard and an ipad. The result is a beautiful pastoral, kosmische drift of sheer joy.
By the way fans of the work of Mr. Brooks should know that you can pre-order the new Advisory Circle album now, As The Crow Flies from the Ghost Box shop (release date 8th July).

Ghost Box DJs London and Portsmouth ahoy

Two Ghost Box DJing events this month. The first will be this weekend on the 18th June at the SHNDG micro festival in Protsmouth, where your vicar will pour oil on the troubled waters of the avant garde by playing some light, melodic music. A marked and possibly ill advised contrast  to what is billed as a...

night of Noise, electronics, DIY sonic reverberation and drone. Which as its founder, creator  & custodian of all things Shndg Mr Stevens says "should make for an evening of distinctly uneasy listening."
Ticket only event available from the Wedgewood Rooms, Southsea

Then on Sunday 26th at London's Lexington on Pentonville Rd, London Mr House and I will again be offering balm to troubled souls at The Hangover Lounge...

A soft comedown club for hard drinkers, The Hangover Lounge is the place to eat Sunday lunch, drink hair of the dog, meet like-minded souls, read the papers and make idle chit chat all to some soothing sounds. That might mean country rock or deep soul or psychedelia or soft pop or lovers rock, or anything else which sounds great and will make your head feel so much the better.

The Hangover Lounge is on each and every Sunday from 2pm. Hangover optional, dancing not required.

The sunday afternoon club for saturday night drinkers, playing a relaxed blend of reggae, soul, indie, folk, and psychedelia at a volume you can talk over.

As The Crow Flies

The New album from The Advisory Circle, As the Crow Flies, will be released on vinyl, CD and download on 8th July. You can pre-order it right now.

The CD version has two bonus tracks but customers who buy the vinyl LP direct from the Ghost Box shop will be able to get the full length download version for free.
Its an exploration of the passage of time and the wheel of the year. Achingly beautiful and melancholy melodic analogue electronics, the trademark Advisory Circle sound palette is broadened to include some traditional acoustic instrumentation.
One of Julian Houses strongest Ghost Box covers so far with beautiful sleeve notes courtesy of Professor Ronald Hutton author of Stations of The Sun and Triumph of the Moon.
