PEEL AWAY THE IVY by THE PATTERN FORMS OUT 21st OCTOBER

The debut album from The Pattern Forms, a collaborative project between Ed Macfarlane and Edd Gibson of Friendly Fires and Jon Brooks of The Advisory Circle, is due out 21st October 

Following on from the Other Voices 03 single in 2015, this is an album that perfectly melds blissful pop with more exploratory electronics, its roots lying in the artists' shared love of soundtracks and electronic library music of the 70s and 80s. It should appeal to fans of both bands.



On DL, CD, and heavyweight LP, with luxurious packaging designed by Julian House. There'll also be a special coloured vinyl version exclusive to Rough Trade Records. Pre-orders will open early October.

The vibe is mannered psych-folk embellished with simmering electronics, recalling Super Furry Animals at their most reflective on "Patterns Somewhere". here and there, meanwhile they abandon the song: the gorgeous "Luftglider", in particular, imagining Klaus Schulze transported to a rural English idyll.

Someone’s needed to do an album like this for a long time. Electronic but also multi-instrumentally organic in the way that a hook-up between Popol Vuh or Ash Ra Tempel and acid-folk dons The Incredible String Band might be if both those acts were current; but then washed with a poised, contemporary sheen of interpretive, skilfully referenced analogue futurism.

PRE-ORDER THE APPLE TREE BY HINTERMASS

The new album by Hintermass, The Apple Tree is due for release on 18th March and Pre-orders open today in the Ghost Box shop .

Its the first LP from Hintermass following their Study Series single for Ghost Box in 2011. The duo comprises Jon Brooks (The Advisory Circle) and Tim Felton (of Seeland and formerly Broadcast) who come together with an elegantly crafted pastoral pop album. Brooks beautiful production complements Felton's rich vocal perfectly. Catchy songs with electronic and folk sensibilities are balanced by expertly handled abstract sketches and instrumental pieces.

Both artists cite the kosmiche music of Ash-ra and Popul Vuh and their simultaneous re-discovery of the music of Nico as strong influences on the album. The songs also have clear roots in both traditional and psychedelic folk.

Emotionally engaging and nostalgically transportive, ‘The Apple Tree’s golden-hued scenes and sketches should set you up nicely for the returning spring... a bittersweet paean to the half-remembered high summer tryst under the fruit trees that you never had.

Jon Brooks is in  calm and reflective frame of mind, with elegant icy electronics on this limited edition  of 250 LPs. Available now (and not for long if recent Brooks LP projects are anything to go by) only at  More Than Human.

MORE CARNACKI ALBUMS - SLIGHTLY DAMAGED

The batch of Music For Thomas Carnacki LPs sold out almost instantly. But  if you missed out last week we have a last chance, consolation prize.

We discovered that as a result of poltergeist activity in the warehouse, one box of  LPs in our consignment had slightly damaged spines. Ranging from a slight crease to a small tear, but nothing major at all and the vinyl is unaffected.

So we're offering these at a reduced price in the Guest Shop now - but hurry the last lot went in the space of half an hour !

JON BROOKS' MUSIC FOR THOMAS CARNACKI

In the GHOST BOX GUEST SHOP now, Jon Brooks' Music for Thomas Carnacki LP.

In 2011 Jon Brooks (The Advisory Circle, The Pattern Forms, Hintermass, Georges Vert, etc) created a score for a Resonance FM production of a short story by William Hope Hodgson. Called Gateway Of The Monster, it featured the psychic detective character Thomas Carnacki .

Utilising banks of oscillators, tape edits and analogue delays, Brooks created themes, cues and abstracts to depict the dark Edwardian setting of the story. This has just been pressed in a super limited edition of 300 on Norman Records' Fleece imprint. These sold out instantly, but we managed to secure the last 50 copies.

Artwork  is courtesy of Ian (Hope) Hodgson of  Moon Wiring Club , who also narrated the story when it was broadcast. Each album includes a free download code.

Here's a special mix that Brooks put together to mark this vinyl release.  It opens with the spine chillingly majestic Carnacki Theme:

OTHER VOICES 03 AND 04, COMING IN FEBRUARY

The next two singles in our Other Voices series both feature very special guests.

Other Voices 03 introduces an exciting new ensemble, The Pattern Forms. Made up of Jon Brooks (The Advisory Circle) with Ed Gibson and Ed MacFarlane (both of Friendly Fires). Expertly crafted, dreamy, electronic pop with light, airborne vocals and just a hint of dark magick.


The next in the series is by Steve Moore, well known for his retro futuristic work both as a solo artist and as bass and keyboard player with Zombi. This single for Other Voices, captures an elegant and minimalistic performance from Moore on analogue synth, Hammond organ and vintage string machine. Two perfectly balanced and paired down science fiction landscape miniatures.

THE ADVISORY CIRCLE, FROM OUT HERE

We're very excited to announce that the new album by The Advisory Circle, From Out Here will be released on 5th December.

Exploring darker territory than  2012’s more pastoral As The Crow Flies, The Advisory Circle hint at a Wyndham-esque science fiction story, where bucolic English scenery is being manipulated and maybe even artificially generated by bizarre multi-dimensional computer technology.

Jon Brooks’ strong sense of melody and composition is still evident as is his renowned sound design and production skill. All of which make this a rich and rewarding experience.
 

The CD and LP will come lavishly packaged with artwork by Julian House based on the original concepts for the music. The 180gm LP will come with a free download code, and the download and CD versions include three bonus tracks.

It'll be released on 5th December and will be available to pre-order in the Ghost Box shop from 12th November. 

JON BROOKS 52 LP IN THE GUEST SHOP

52  is Jon Brooks' second release for Clay Pipe Music after the hugely successful Shapwick back in 2012. This time Jon is moonlighting from his Advisory Circle work for Ghost Box, with a less analogue sound and in more personal and reflective mode. Inspired by his Grandmothers' house (where he spent much of his time as a child), 52 consists of 14 electronic and atmospheric aural memories of the house and garden.

This limited edition record has already sold out in pre-orders from Clay Pipe and other retailers and The Ghost Box Guest Shop has managed to reserve the last batch of 100 LPs in the country. Each LP features gorgeous sleeve art by Frances Castle and comes with a free download code.

Jon Brooks fans will also be excited to hear that the new Advisory Circle album From Out Here will be released  on 5th December this year. More info and clips about that in these pages next week.

OTHER VOICES 01

The new series of singles by regular Ghost Box artists and some very exciting guests commences later this month. The series is called Other Voices and kicks off with a collaboration between Sean O'Hagan of the High Llamas and Jon Brooks of The Advisory Circle.

Brooks and O'Hagan show off their effortless songwriting and masterly production skills in two beautiful pieces of gentle sunshine pop, with a warm blend of acoustic instruments,  synth and voice. This is a  must-have, limited, first part of a series that promises to be very exciting indeed. Future contributors that we are allowed to mention  so far include, Steve Moore, Ed MacFarlane (Friendly Fires), Listening Center, Pye Corner Audio and The Soundcarriers.

You can hear the A side, Calibair on the latest Radio Belbury Programme.  Its available from 28th July on a super heavyweight little chunk of vinyl or on donwload but you can pre-order right now from the Ghost Box shop.

GEORGES VERT - AN ELECTRIC MIND

New on Melodic records this month we would highly recommend the cosmic disco odyssey long player by veteran French composer and synthesist, Georges Vert. Compiled and produced with the help of this parish's very own Jon Brooks and first re-issued digitally on his own Café Kaput label last year, this time round it gets a vinyl release (with free download codes included). There are a few of these very limited edition LPs here in the Ghost Box shop.

DOWN TO THE SILVER SEA

There's a new compilation LP out on Moon Wiring Club's Gecophonic records this week. Featuring Kno (who may or may not include Jon Brooks in its line up), Sarah Angliss (of Spacedog), Time Attendant, Moon Wiring Club and Howling Moss (which may or may not feature Pye Corner Audio's Martin Jenkins). Its never entirely clear who's doing what with whom on this record but this is par for the course on Gecophonic. Its a delightful Seaside Summertime Special all the same and comes in beautiful and insanely detailed packaging by Ian Hodgson.

Official release date is 33.07.23. Of course it is. However there's a limited supply available in the Ghost Box shop right now.
